A Legacy of Devotion: The Founders of Shri SitaRaam Mandhir
This is the story of two remarkable souls. Mr. Balwanth Gunpath and Mrs. Radha Gunpath, the beloved founders of the Shri SitaRaam Mandhir. Though not known to the world for fame or fortune, they were extraordinary in the way they lived, loved, and gave. Their lives were a testament to unwavering faith, selfless service, and a deep-rooted commitment to community. Through this tribute, we honor not just their journey, but the legacy they etched into the hearts of all who knew them.
Balwanth Gunpath was born and raised in Malacca Road, Redhill, while Radha Gunpath hailed from Welbedacht, Chatsworth. Destiny brought them together in January 1983, and they were married on 2 April 1983, a union that would go on to inspire generations.Their spiritual journey began humbly in 1984, at their home on Lawnhaven Avenue, Phoenix. What started as a small gathering soon blossomed into a movement. With a clear vision of what lay ahead, they pressed forward with only one intention: to serve the Lord and uplift the community. They didn’t just live in the community, they became its heartbeat. In June 1986, Foresthaven Hindu Dharma Sabha (FHDS) was officially established. Amidst raising their three children, Natasha, Kavir, and Kamal. The couple poured their energy into building a spiritual sanctuary. Balancing family life with a growing religious mission was no easy feat, but they gave it their all, ensuring every commitment was honored with grace and devotion.Their faith extended far beyond Sunday Satsangs, which continue to this day. It was evident in their actions, their compassion, and their open hearts. People sought their guidance not just for their wisdom, but for their ability to listen without judgment. As the Sabha grew, major prayers and functions were held at a neighbor’s property in Lawnhaven. Under a marquee, with a handmade stage and prayer shrine, the community gathered for bhajans, kirtans, plays, and dances, moments that became the soul of the Sabha.
Eventually, Mr. Gunpath secured a classroom at Foresthaven Secondary School, where worship continued. Celebrations like Ram Naumi, Krishna Ashtami, and Navarathri brought the community together in joyous devotion.A monumental milestone came on 15 February 1995, when plans for a permanent property were submitted to the City Engineering Department. By 31 July 1995, approval was granted for 186/188 Hannaford Drive. With the help of a wonderful builder and architect, building plans were finalized. In October 1995, the first soil prayer was held, and construction began. On 16 August 1998, the Sabha moved into the newly built Admin Block. A year later, construction of the Mandhir began. On 25 June 2002, a cheque was issued to Daveglen Trading (India) for the purchase of the sacred Murthis, which arrived in Durban on 30 September 2002. The consecration was confirmed by the priest for 5–8 June 2003. On 8 June, the deities were bathed, dressed, and taken on a grand float procession through the district, a moment of pure exhilaration and divine celebration. The Mandhir officially became the spiritual home of the community.Under their leadership, FHDS flourished. From beach trips and year-end functions to Wild Coast retreats, Mr. and Mrs. Gunpath never stopped giving. But in March 2010, the community was shaken by the passing of Mrs. Radha Gunpath, a gifted musician and radiant soul, who lost her battle with cancer at just 49. Her loss left a void that words could never fill.
Despite the heartbreak, Mr. Gunpath and his children carried on the sacred mission. Through every challenge, they remained steadfast. Then, in May 2022, the community faced another devastating loss as Mr. Balwanth Gunpath passed away at the age of 69 due to renal failure.Their impact cannot be measured by wealth or accolades, but by the countless lives they touched. Their legacy lives on in the stories of kindness, sacrifice, and unwavering presence, stories that echo through time. They didn’t just build a temple, they built a community. Every corner of the Mandhir holds memories of laughter, shared meals, love, and joy. While time may fade some details, for those who were there, and for us, it will forever remain a testament to their faith, sacrifice, and boundless love for the Lord and His devotees.
